“He has aged 10 years”: Daughter shares devastation over toll of Melbourne’s lockdowns
The daughter of a 95-twelvemonth-old man has told a Melbourne energy station that this past year's senior aid lockdown has taken a devastating toll on her father's wellness.
Gillian told radio station 3AW her father, Doug, was "very healthy" when He moved into residential aged care deuce years past.
Doug – father of half-dozen, grandp of 14, great grandfather of 22, and great-great granddaddy of three – is very a lot loved by his family, most of whom are vaccinated against COVID-19, at least with the first dose.
But during the onetime year's lockdowns in Melbourne, Gillian noticed Doug's condition deteriorated significantly.
"Since COVID-19, he's destroyed down a lot," she told 3AW's Neil Mitchell .
"He aged probably 10 years in the last year because they'Ra non out."
"I interpret that. Unfortunately, last year we did lose so umteen, but this year is totally different," she said.
Gillian said the class managed to take Doug out earlier in the year, and he got back to "about 70 or 75% of what he was like before COVID, where he could walk with us and had some muscularity back."
The concerned girl added, "They don't do any exercise operating theatre anything in the homes."
But following the Holocene epoch COVID outbreak, the latest lockdowns in Melbourne accept caused Doug's health to drop further.
"He's now exhausted descending again because our loveable government is saying No visits unless it's stop-of-life."
"I understand they have to keep the residents safe, but you should see the deterioration in the residents," Gillian same.
With the home again limiting visitors, Doug's condition is declining again.
"It's non the home, they're going away the government. The governance is telling them they can't let visitors in and hoi polloi can't fail out, even for practise."
According to the Victorian Department of Health website , two visitors are allowed into aged care homes at one time.
